Pac-Man (stylized in all capitals as PAC-MAN) is a classic arcade game created by Toru Iwatani (born 1955) of Namco. It was first released in Japan under the name PUCKMAN in May 1980. The game was licensed for distribution in the United States by Midway Games and launched there in October 1980. During this period, arcade gaming was dominated by stark space shooter titles like Galaxian and Asteroids. Pac-Man was groundbreaking in establishing the maze chase genre's conventions and has since become a legendary title in video game history. It also stands as an iconic symbol of 1980s popular culture. Interestingly, there may have been gender trends among gamers; a 1982 estimate suggested that 60% of Pac-Man players were women, whereas 90% of players of the space shoot-'em-up Omega Race were men.
