The Smurfs (French: Les Schtroumpfs; Dutch: De Smurfen) is a renowned Belgian comic franchise centered around a fictional community of small, blue, humanoid creatures. These charming beings reside in mushroom-shaped houses nestled within a forest. The franchise was first conceived and introduced as a series of comic characters by Belgian artist Peyo (the pseudonym of Pierre Culliford) in 1958, initially known as Les Schtroumpfs. Over time, the franchise has expanded to include more than 100 Smurf characters, each named after adjectives that highlight their unique traits—such as "Jokey Smurf," who enjoys playing practical jokes on his friends. The first female Smurf introduced into the series was Smurfette. The Smurfs are recognizable by their Phrygian caps, which have historically symbolized freedom and independence in modern culture.
